All categories may have varying levels of sensuality, but the love story/romantic relationship is always the main focus. The Swirl Awards recognizes the following categories:
Best Book Cover - Readers choose the most visually/emotionally appealing cover of the year. No word count requirement
Best Series - Voted on by readers, best series encompasses all the books in a series to date. In order to qualify, the most recent release in the series must fall in the voting year.
Best Publisher of Multicultural Romance - The reader chooses the publisher that provides the best selection of Multicultural/IR romance.
Anthology - A book comprised of three or more romance titles.
BDSM - A romance where the dynamic of the relationship revolves around bondage, discipline, and submission.
Contemporary - Stories that take place in real time and in any location and where the primary focus is the romantic relationship.
Fantasy/Futuristic - The setting of the story is either in the future or a fantasy world, or another dimension.
Paranormal - The primary focus is the love story, but there are paranormal elements essential to the plot or character development.
Historical - Stories set in any time period before 1945.
Inspirational - Stories where the primary focus is a romantic relationship, but religious or spiritual overtones are relevant to the plot.
Romantic Suspense-Stories where the primary focus is a romantic relationship, but there are suspenseful undertones.
Short Novella - Any story with a word count of 10,000-20,000 words.
